WHAT WE LOVE
Matta is a lifestyle brand, inspired by founder Cristina Gitti's love of ethnic textiles and clothing from her worldwide travels. Cristina develops unique, timeless pieces and easy-to-layer styles from fabrics that are hand spun, hand woven and handmade. The ethically produced clothing collections are made from lightweight cotton, wools, and silks fashioned into dresses, kaftans, shawls, and tops. Goods that combine traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic.
Alongside the women's clothing collections, Matta offers a selection of complementary accessories and home goods from like-minded brands.
"Matta is committed to a thoughtful lifestyle with the intent to tread lightly and respect the natural world around us."

ABOUT THE SHOPKEEPER
Cristina Gitti fell in love with India when she first travelled there in 1995 on a product development trip. Traveling from Jaipur to Delhi and Mumbai she watched and learnt the various textile techniques, block printing, tie-dye, weaving and embroidery. Cristina moved to New York from her native Milan, with limited English, leaving behind her set design studio where she had worked on projects for companies such as Diesel and Mandarina Duck. Once in New York, Cristina started designing packaging for men’s boxers that were made in India. The packaging was so well received that Cristina was sent to India to develop product, which launched her on a new career path. Cristina’s company Matta formed in 2003, after splitting with her former partner and company Malatesta.
After fifteen years the original Matta store in New York's Soho closed during the pandemic. The Sag Harbor location that opened in 2018 is ideally suited to the laid-back Hamptons lifestyle. Matta can also be found at various pop-ups and trunk shows throughout the year and at more than 100 beautiful boutiques around the world.
