Woodworker, photographer, artist, and surfer Chris Gentile opened Pilgrim Surf + Supply in Brooklyn in early 2012. The store became a gathering place for artists, filmmakers, musicians, writers, surfers and the local community. The shop is named after Pilgrim Avenue in Point Judith, Rhode Island, where Chris caught his first wave at nine-years-old.

Pilgrim Surf + Supply features boards by more than fifteen shapers based out of New York, New Jersey, California, Hawaii, and Australia. There is also a selection of surf gear, menswear, womenswear, accessories, apothecary, and books. The men's and women's Pilgrim Surf + Supply clothing brand focuses on sustainability, durability, and function.

Following the popularity of a brand partnership in Japan, Pilgrim Surf + Supply opened stores in Tokyo and Kyoto. In 2022 after ten years on the corner of Wythe Avenue and North 3rd Street, Pilgrim Surf + Supply moved into an imposing building erected to house North Side Bank in 1889.
