WHAT WE LOVE
Archie's Press in New York's East Village features letterpress printed maps, charts, and stationery. Established by designer and printer, Archie Archambault, who opened the shop in December 2021. Archie's background and skills in art, philosophy, urban design, and advertising converged on his map-making project as an antidote to GPS. His first circular map was of Portland where he was living at the time and was followed by more maps of places and different subjects.
Archie's Press is home to an operational Vandercook SP-15 Letterpress from the 1960s. The maps are printed on heavyweight cotton paper creating a very satisfying texture. Alongside Archie's work is a selection of work by and collaborations with other artists and designers.
"New research indicates that GPS's are hindering our ability to create mental maps of our surroundings. My maps aim to install a "Map from the Mind", simplifying structures and neighborhoods in the most efficient and beautiful way."
