WHAT WE LOVE
Named for the traditional 18th Century French block-printed fabric, Les Indiennes opened in Hudson in 2014. Initially an online only business founded in 2002 by Mary Bergtold Mulcahy. The shop was a natural progression as the business grew affording customers an opportunity to discover the complete range of products in real life.
The fabrics mix both classic and graphic patterns for a modern take on a traditional process. All the textiles are printed in Southern India using natural dyes in the traditional Kalamkari process. The organic cotton fabric is then fashioned into a wonderful array of apparel and goods for the home. To complement the textiles there are wallpapers, ceramics and an interesting assortment of vintage items and collectibles.
"I am most proud of being able to provide so many jobs in such a rural, impoverished part of India. This gives me the greatest satisfaction of all."
Mary Bergtold Mulcahy, shopkeeper at Les Indiennes
THE SHOPKEEPER
Mary Bergtold Mulcahy fell in love with Indian block printed bed covers in a UNESCO shop. A former fashion and interiors photo stylist, and editor for Harper’s Bazaar, she went on the hunt to discover the perfect cotton block prints. She found a small family business in Pedana, Southern India, and the supplier, Srinivas, became Mary’s business partner.
Residing in upstate New York, Hudson was the ideal location for Mary to open her shop, Les Indiennes. A stylist, she enjoys staging and re-staging the shop, which is a wonderful opportunity for her to meet clients and hear their feedback. Mary enjoys evolving and reinventing the brand. Les Indiennes recently introduced an indigo collection, and is now working on a linen collection. Also there is a range of repurposed furniture upholstered in patterned canvas in the works and Les Indiennes will collaborate on custom projects.
