WHAT WE LOVE
À la Mère de Famille is the oldest chocolate shop in Paris and a beautiful example of a store from France's La Belle Époque. In 1984 the shop's elegant facade was listed as a historical monument, whilst the interior retains original details including the mosaic tiled floor, lighting, display cabinets, and counter.
The 35 Rue du Faubourg Montmartre store first opened in 1761 as a grocery store remaining in the same family until 1895. The mid-nineteenth century saw À la Mère de Famille transform from a grocery shop into one specializing in confectionery. The transformation was complete when the new owner renovated the building in 1895 and created the current historic facade. In 2000 Étienne Dolfi and his family took over the business expanding it to eleven stores across Paris, each with a signature, classic green shopfront.
Inside À la Mère de Famille assorted chocolates and confectionery are presented in signature brown and orange boxes. The shop is filled with both big and small boxes, chocolate formed into bars and shapes, and offered as spreads and enrobing ice cream. Specialities include grignotines, orangettes, dolfentins, and pralines. À la Mère de Famille perfectly captures the famous idiom " Like a kind in a candy store ".
